The Moroccan desert is one such place. Immense, silent, vibrant with raw beauty, it offered us much more than a simple trip: a parenthesis out of time, a return to the essentials. At sunrise, the first golden rays are reflected on the Merzouga dunes. We feel tiny in this ocean of sand. The dunes undulate like frozen waves, changing color with every hour of the day.

A camel trek takes us to a bivouac in the heart of the desert. The slow swaying, the crunch of sand underfoot, the total silence: everything invites us to meditate. Here, there’s no network, no noise. Just us, the stars and the immensity.

Night falls quickly. The camp is lit up with lanterns, Berbers bustle around the fire and tajines fill the air. We share mint tea, traditional songs and simple laughter.
Then comes the silence. An incredibly clear sky opens up above us, pierced by thousands of stars. We’ve never seen a Milky Way so clear. Lying back on a blanket, we let the warm sand tell us ancient secrets. Further south, near Zagora and M’Hamid El Ghizlane, the desert becomes wilder, more authentic. This is the realm of Erg Chigaga, less visited than Merzouga, but just as magical. We reach it by 4×4, then on foot.

Here, the desert stretches as far as the eye can see, dotted with solitary acacias and tamarisk trees. The experience is more rustic, but strikingly beautiful. Every step is a lesson in humility.

The Moroccan desert isn’t just a place. It’s a state of mind. It strips us of the superfluous, confronts us with ourselves, but always with kindness.

We return different. Soothed. As if the grains of sand had erased some of the noise inside.

Our useful tips:

Light, covering clothes: the sun is strong, but it can be cool in the morning and evening.

Hats, sunglasses and sunscreen to protect you from the sun.

Scarf to protect your face from the sand during camel rides.

Comfortable shoes for walking on sand.

Our practical advice

Cash: small villages often don’t accept credit cards.

Bring lamps or torches if you sleep in a bivouac.

Cash: small villages often don’t accept credit cards.

There are places that don’t speak… but listen.
